Why teach English in Lithuania?
Lithuania is the largest of the three Baltic states, with a population of about 2.9 million, a fast-growing tech and finance sector, and one of the most attractive capitals in the region. Vilnius has a UNESCO-listed baroque old town, a lively café culture and an expanding international community. Living costs are lower than in western Europe, and Lithuania makes a convenient base for exploring Latvia, Estonia, Poland and the Baltic coast. Few foreign teachers know the market, so competition is low.
What kinds of English teaching jobs are there in Lithuania?
Language schools. The main employer of foreign English teachers, teaching children, teenagers and adults general, exam and business English. Adult classes usually run in the evenings and at weekends.
Business English. Vilnius has grown into a regional hub for fintech, IT and shared service centres, so companies buy in-company English training, often through language schools or freelance trainers.
International schools. A small number in Vilnius and Kaunas follow British, American or IB curricula and want qualified teachers with a teaching licence.
Universities. Lithuanian universities run English-taught programmes and language centres, usually wanting a master’s degree and experience.
State schools. Lithuanian public schools teach in Lithuanian and employ Lithuanian-qualified teachers, so they are rarely an option for foreign TEFL teachers.
Private tutoring and online teaching. A common way to top up income alongside a school timetable.
How much do English teachers earn in Lithuania?
Language schools often pay by the hour, with business English paying best, and international schools pay monthly salaries on their own scales. Lithuania’s minimum wage rose 11.1 per cent to €1,153 gross a month, or €7.05 an hour, on 1 January 2026, so a full-time contract must pay at least that. Pay is modest by western European standards but goes further given lower living costs, especially outside central Vilnius. Check how many paid hours are guaranteed before you accept a part-time contract. Compare pay across countries on the TEFL Salary Index, or read how much TEFL teachers make.
What qualifications do you need to teach English in Lithuania?
Most employers expect a bachelor’s degree and a TEFL certificate of at least 120 hours. University posts need a master’s degree, and international schools want a teaching licence and experience. Business English skills are especially useful in Vilnius. Our Ofqual-regulated Level 5 TEFL course can be verified on the Ofqual register.
Which visa do you need to teach English in Lithuania?
Lithuania is an EU member state, so EU, EEA and Swiss citizens, including Irish passport holders, can live and work there freely and register their residence. UK citizens lost that right after Brexit. UK, US and other non EU teachers need a work and residence permit, applied for with a job offer through Lithuania’s Migration Department. The employer usually handles much of the process. Check current rules with the Lithuanian embassy and our Visa Desk before you accept an offer.
Where are the English teaching jobs in Lithuania?
Vilnius, the capital, has most language schools, business English work and international schools, and the highest rents. Kaunas, the second city, has large universities and a growing tech scene. Klaipėda, the port city on the Baltic coast, and Šiauliai have smaller markets and lower costs.
What is it like teaching and living in Lithuania?
Lithuanians can seem reserved at first but are warm and loyal once you know them. Students are generally motivated and respectful, and adult learners value practical, professional lessons. Basketball is a national passion, summers are mild with long light evenings, and winters are cold and dark. Learning some Lithuanian is appreciated and makes daily life easier, though many younger people in Vilnius speak good English.

Living costs
Lithuania is cheaper than western Europe, but Vilnius rents have risen with the city’s tech boom, so budget carefully. Rent is the biggest cost, highest in the Old Town and city centre, and lower in residential districts such as Žirmūnai, Lazdynai and Fabijoniškės. Kaunas, Klaipėda and Šiauliai are noticeably cheaper.
Public transport is cheap and reliable, groceries are reasonably priced, and eating out is good value. Utilities, especially winter heating, are almost never included in the rent and are one of the biggest monthly costs after it.

Is Lithuania expensive to live in?

Can I teach English in Lithuania without a degree?

What is the best TEFL certificate for teaching in Lithuania?
An accredited TEFL certificate of at least 120 hours, such as our 120 Hour Advanced TEFL Course, is the standard for Lithuanian language schools. Our guide to the best TEFL certifications for Europe compares the options.

Not for language schools or international schools, where lessons are in English, and many younger people in Vilnius speak good English.
