Is it safe to teach English in Jordan?

Jordan is generally stable and welcoming, and Amman has a large international community. Regional tensions do affect it, though. In 2026 the UK briefly advised against all but essential travel to the whole country before lifting that warning in June, and it still advises against all travel within 3km of the border with Syria and has advised against all but essential travel to Aqaba’s airport and seaport. Read the latest advice from your own government before you accept a job, make sure your travel insurance is valid, and keep it under review while you are there.

What kinds of English teaching jobs are there in Jordan?

Private language centres. Teach adults, university students and children, often in the afternoon and evening. Many focus on IELTS and TOEFL preparation for study abroad.

International and private schools. Amman has many schools following British, American and IB curricula. They pay best and want a teaching qualification and experience.

Universities. English foundation and language programmes, usually asking for a master’s degree.

NGOs and refugee education. Jordan hosts large refugee populations, and NGOs run English and education programmes. Some roles are paid and some are volunteer based.

How much do English teachers earn in Jordan?

Language centres commonly pay about JOD 600 to 1,000 a month, depending on hours and experience. International schools pay more, and packages for qualified teachers often include housing, flights and health insurance. Jordan’s minimum wage is JOD 290 a month, so teaching pay is well above it. The dinar is pegged to the US dollar, so the value of your salary is stable, though Amman is one of the more expensive cities in the region. Compare pay across countries on the TEFL Salary Index.

What qualifications do you need to teach English in Jordan?

Most employers want a bachelor’s degree, which is usually needed for the work permit, and a TEFL certificate of at least 120 hours. A Level 5 TEFL or CELTA helps with the better centres, and international schools want a teaching qualification such as a PGCE. You will need your degree certificate authenticated and a clean criminal record check. Our Ofqual-regulated Level 5 TEFL course can be verified on the Ofqual register.

Which visa do you need to teach English in Jordan?

Many nationalities, including UK, Irish and US citizens, can get a visa on arrival or through the Jordan Pass for tourism, but that does not allow work. Your employer applies for a work permit through the Ministry of Labour, after which you complete a medical test and receive a residence permit. Check current rules with the Jordanian embassy and our Visa Desk before you accept an offer.

Where are the English teaching jobs in Jordan?

Amman, the capital, has most of the schools, language centres and universities. Irbid in the north is a university city with lower costs. Zarqa is a large city near Amman with private schools and centres, and Aqaba on the Red Sea has a smaller market linked to tourism and its economic zone.

What is it like teaching and living in Jordan?

Jordanians are famously hospitable, and the country is full of history and landscape, from Petra and Wadi Rum to the Dead Sea. Classes are generally respectful, and many students are highly motivated by study abroad goals. Jordan is a Muslim majority country, so dress modestly, respect Ramadan, and be aware that attitudes are conservative outside parts of Amman. The working week usually runs Sunday to Thursday.

Living costs

Jordan is moderately priced for the region, but Amman is one of the more expensive Arab cities to live in. Rent is the main cost, highest in West Amman districts such as Abdoun, Sweifieh and Shmeisani, and much lower in East Amman, Irbid and Zarqa.

Local food, falafel and street food are cheap, buses are inexpensive, and taxis and ride hailing are widely used. Imported groceries, alcohol and international restaurants cost more. Utilities are usually paid separately from rent.

All figures below are in Jordanian dinars (JOD) and are Numbeo’s Amman averages and July 2026 price data, checked on 2 October 2026. Prices change, so check a current source before you budget.

TEFL jobs in Jordan: FAQS

Q:

How much can I earn as an English teacher in Jordan?

Language centres commonly pay about JOD 600 to 1,000 a month, depending on hours and experience, and international schools pay more, often with housing, flights and health insurance. Jordan’s minimum wage is JOD 290 a month. These are approximate typical ranges, so confirm the full package in writing.

Moderately. Amman is one of the pricier Arab cities, but a one-bedroom flat costs about JOD 300 a month in the centre and JOD 190 further out, and a single person spends about JOD 566 a month before rent. Local food and buses are cheap, while imported goods cost more.

It is difficult. A bachelor’s degree is usually required for the work permit, so legal teaching jobs without one are rare, though some NGO and volunteer programmes are more flexible. If you do not have a degree, see our guide to teaching English without a degree.

The best TEFL certificate for Jordan is an accredited course of at least 120 hours, with strong IELTS and TOEFL preparation content, because so many Jordanian students study for exams to go abroad. An Ofqual-regulated Level 5 TEFL diploma or CELTA helps with the better language centres, universities and international schools, and it sits on a public government register an employer can check for your work permit. Our Level 5 TEFL Diploma meets the higher standard.

Jordan is generally stable, and Amman has a large international community, but regional tensions affect it. The UK lifted its warning against all but essential travel to the whole country in June 2026, and still advises against all travel within 3km of the Syrian border and against all but essential travel to Aqaba’s airport and seaport. Always check your own government’s latest advice and keep it under review.

No. Lessons are taught in English, and English is widely spoken in business and among younger people in Amman. Learning some Arabic is appreciated and makes daily life, shopping and paperwork easier, especially outside the capital. Compare nearby options in our guide to teaching English in Egypt.
