Teach English in Lebanon
TEFL jobs in Lebanon
Teaching English in Lebanon is not something we recommend planning right now. As of September 2026, fighting and airstrikes continue in parts of the country, the UK advises against all travel to large areas and against all but essential travel to the rest, and the US, Canada and Australia advise against all travel. Travel insurance is usually invalid if you go against official advice. If Lebanon is your goal, the safest options for now are to teach Lebanese students online or to build experience in Jordan, Cyprus or the Gulf, and to check official advice before making any plans.
Teaching English in Lebanon at a glance
| Current advice | UK: against all travel to large areas, all but essential travel elsewhere. US: Level 4, do not travel. Canada and Australia: avoid all travel |
| Our recommendation | Do not relocate to teach for now. Teach online or choose a nearby alternative |
| Usual employers | Private and international schools, universities, language centres and NGOs, mainly in Beirut |
| Usual requirements | A degree and a TEFL certificate of at least 120 hours; schools want a teaching qualification |
| Pay | Most foreign hires are paid in US dollars because of the Lebanese pound’s collapse |
| Safer alternatives | Online teaching, Jordan, Cyprus, the UAE and Qatar |
Is it safe to teach English in Lebanon?
Not at the moment. Military activity linked to the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has continued into 2026, particularly in southern Lebanon, the Beqaa and parts of Beirut’s southern suburbs. Government advice changes quickly and differs between countries. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office advises against all travel to several governorates and parts of Beirut and against all but essential travel to the rest, and consular help is severely limited in those areas. Travel insurance is usually invalid where your government advises against travel. Always read the latest advice from your own government before you decide anything.
What was the English teaching market like in Lebanon?
In more stable times, Lebanon had a well educated, multilingual population, with many people speaking Arabic, French and English. Private and international schools, mostly in Beirut and Mount Lebanon, recruited qualified teachers, often for British, American, French or IB programmes. Universities ran English foundation courses, language centres taught adults and exam candidates, and NGOs ran English programmes, including for refugees. Since the financial crisis that began in 2019, salaries for foreign hires have mostly been agreed in US dollars, because the Lebanese pound lost most of its value.
What qualifications would you need?
Employers have generally asked for a bachelor’s degree and a TEFL certificate of at least 120 hours, with schools wanting a teaching qualification and experience. A work permit is arranged through the employer and the Ministry of Labour, followed by residency through General Security. Because these rules and the security situation can change quickly, confirm everything with the Lebanese embassy and your employer if you are ever offered a post. A regulated qualification is useful wherever you teach, and our Ofqual-regulated Level 5 TEFL course can be verified on the Ofqual register.
How can you teach Lebanese students safely?
Online teaching is the safest route. Lebanese families and professionals still invest heavily in English for exams, university applications and work abroad, and many learn online. Our guide to online English teaching jobs explains who hires and what they pay.
Where else could you teach in the region?
Jordan has a similar Arabic speaking classroom and a stable market for private schools and language centres; see our guide to teaching English in Jordan. Cyprus is an EU island a short flight away, covered in our guide to teaching English in Cyprus. For higher, tax free pay, the Gulf is the strongest option, with guides to TEFL jobs in Dubai and teaching English in Qatar.

Living costs
Before thinking about living costs in Lebanon, check whether travel is safe and insurable. While official advice is against travel to much of the country, we do not publish a relocation budget, because we do not recommend moving there to teach for now.
For context, prices have been extremely volatile since the financial crisis that began in 2019, and most rents and many everyday costs are now quoted in US dollars rather than Lebanese pounds. Electricity and fuel supply have been unreliable, so many households pay extra for private generators.
The points below summarise official advice as of September 2026. It changes often, so always read the latest guidance from your own government.

TEFL jobs in Lebanon : FAQS
Is it safe to teach English in Lebanon right now?
Not at the moment. As of September 2026, fighting continues in parts of Lebanon. The UK advises against all travel to large areas and against all but essential travel to the rest, the US lists Lebanon at Level 4, and Canada and Australia advise against all travel. Travel insurance is usually invalid if you go against official advice, so always read your own government’s latest guidance first.
How can I teach Lebanese students without travelling?
Teach online. Lebanese students and professionals still invest heavily in English for exams, university applications and work abroad, and many learn online with teachers based elsewhere. Our guide to online English teaching jobs explains who hires and what they pay.
Can I teach English in Lebanon without a degree?
Lebanon usually requires a bachelor’s degree for a work permit, so without one it is very hard to work legally there. If you do not have a degree, online teaching and countries with more flexible rules are better options, covered in our guide to teaching English without a degree.
Where else in the Middle East can I teach English?
Jordan offers a similar Arabic speaking classroom and a stable market, covered in our guide to teaching English in Jordan. Cyprus is an EU island nearby, and the Gulf pays the most, with tax free packages in Dubai, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
What is the best TEFL certificate for teaching Lebanese students?
An accredited TEFL certificate of at least 120 hours is the standard for online and language centre work, and an Ofqual-regulated Level 5 TEFL diploma or CELTA is the stronger choice for schools and universities in the region. Because many Lebanese learners study for IELTS and university entry, exam preparation skills are especially useful. Our Level 5 TEFL Diploma meets the higher standard and is recognised wherever you teach.
Will you update this guide if the situation in Lebanon improves?
Yes. We review this guide against official travel advice and will restore full pay, job and living cost details when governments no longer advise against travel. Until then, check entry and safety rules on our Visa Desk and your own government’s travel advice.
